Barry was born in Queensland and educated at Brisbane Grammar School and Queensland University.
He moved to Sydney in 1961 and worked there in journalism until 1964
He returned to the Gold Coast in 1966 and in 1969 he established, managed and subsequently sold two medium-size companies supplying to the building industry. He was a member of the Housing Industry Association and a Foundation Committee member of the Gold Coast Building Industry Credit Bureau.
Barry retired in 1995 and moved to HIR in 2001.
He is a keen golfer and an active member of the Golf Club. He organises the popular Trivia nights held each month at the Golf Club.
Barry’s other interests include motor racing and travel with his wife Jan.
For a number of years, Barry has been an active member of the Architectural Review Authority and the Security Sub-Committee.
